Common Questions

Below is a list of answers to commonly asked questions. This should be the first place you look for answers to your questions.

Question: I have installed TrademarkHunter, but I cannot download or search trademarks?
Answer: There are several potential answers to this question. TrademarkHunter requires access to the Internet and to the USPTO websites to perform searches and downloads. If TrademarkHunter has worked previously upon your computer, the problem is probably one of the four below and not the software. Below are the possible answers and the required solution:
  1. You have incorrectly entered a trademark number that does not exist.
SOLUTION: Re-enter the trademark number correctly.

  2. The trademark database section of the USPTO web site is having problems.
SOLUTION: Attempt to download the trademark again or wait a couple of hours for the USPTO to fix the problem. If you are still having problems, you can then attempt to download the trademark image during a "non-peak" usage time such as late evening or early morning.

  3. Your Internet service is not working.
SOLUTION: Call your Internet Service Provider or Network Administrator.

  4. You have firewall that is "blocking" TrademarkHunter from accessing the Internet.
SOLUTION: Adjust the settings of the firewall software to allow TrademarkHunter to access the Internet. (TrademarkHunter uses the proxy settings through "Internet Explorer settings".) If you have a software firewall on your computer (e.g. ZONEALARM, NORTON), you may need to "allow" TrademarkHunter to access the Internet by adjusting your settings. Contact your software vendor for more information on how to adjust these settings.

Question: I can't open/view the downloaded trademarks?
Answer: Make sure you have an Internet browser program that is able to view HTML files. An HTML file viewer is required to view trademarks downloaded with TrademarkHunter (e.g. Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape).

Question: How do I open a trademark image?
Answer: You can simply double-click the trademark document and the trademark record should load within your Internet browser separate of TrademarkHunter. You can also simply RIGHT-CLICK the trademark then select Open Document.

Question: How do I delete trademarks from TrademarkHunter?
Answer: You can either RIGHT-CLICK upon the trademark then select DELETE TRADEMARK(S). If you want to delete all of the trademarks in a folder of TrademarkHunter, you can press CONTROL-A when in the directory, then depress the delete button on your keyboard (or right-click and select Delete Trademarks).

Question: When I perform a trademark search with TrademarkHunter, no trademarks are found. What am I doing wrong?
Answer: If you are having a difficult time searching for trademarks using TrademarkHunter, the USPTO web site could be having problems (see top of this page for considerations) or the search query you are entering may not be proper. Below are some suggestions on how to enter search queries into TrademarkHunter.

Question: How do I know the status of a trademark?
Answer: To verify the status of a trademark, simply right-click upon the record and select Check Status.

Question: Who owns TrademarkHunter?
Answer: Neustel Software, Inc. (Neustel Software, Inc. is owned by Neustel Law Offices, LTD) owns TrademarkHunter.

Question: How do I find trademark practitioners?
Answer: You can do searches for trademark practitioners on various websites such as www.martindale.com.

Question: I get the error "The file OLEAUT32.DLL is out of date. This program requires a newer version." when I try to install Trademarkhunter on my Windows 2000 Computer.
Answer: To solve this problem you must have Windows 2000 SP1 installed on your computer. You can download Windows 2000 SP1 from: http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/default.asp. Once you have downloaded and installed the service pack you will then be able to successfully install Trademarkhunter.
